Getting Started

When you first go to Yahoo! Groups (http://www.groups.yahoo.com) , you will see the Sign In message shown at the left. If you already have a Yahoo ID and password, use those to sign into Yahoo Groups.

If you do not have a Yahoo! ID, you must register for one at this point. Simply select Click here to register and begin the registration process. Your Yahoo! ID will give you access to Yahoo! Groups along with many other features.

(Scroll down to continue with Y Group tutorial.)

You may start your own groups or you may join a group already in existance.

Your organization may start a group and automatically subscribe you. As long as they use an email address that is linked to your Yahoo! ID, the new group will be added to your list of groups.

This navigation bar appears at the top of each page in Yahoo! Groups. Let's start with My Preferences.

My
Preferences

You may select your own settings when you set up your Group account. These settings can be changed at any time.

Moderators can limit access to the various group features. They may choose to give members full rights to all features or may make access so restrictive that members can only read a listing of messages.

When you click on My Groups you get a list of all the groups you moderate and then a list of the groups of which you are a member. Once you have selected a specific group you may edit your delivery options for that group. You may choose to get individual emails, a daily digest of all emails for this group, or you may choose not to receive any emails and simply view all messages via the net. Notice that I do not have the rights to post to the last two groups listed below. This right is determined by the group owner or moderator.

Features

When you are working within Yahoo! groups, each group has these features available. We will briefly take a look at several of these features: Messages, Members, Files, and Calendar. More detailed information is available within the Yahoo! Group Help feature.

Group Messages

On each group's main page is a list of several of the most recent messages and a way to search for archived messages.

Going to the message page itself, shown below, gives you a complete listing of all messages and more details about those messages such as whether they include attachments and when they were sent. Clicking on any message will automatically expand it. (I have blanked out the name of the message author on both of these screens.)

Members Members are listed by their email addressed. Notice not all the address is shown. You can send a message to an individual member by clicking on their name but you will still not see their complete address. Members choose what profile information they want to make available to the public. A smiley face means a member is currently logged into the group.

Files
Each Yahoo! Group has 25 mg that it can use to store files. The moderator controls who has rights to upload, view, and download files. Folders can be used to help organize the files. This is an excellent way to make files available for group revisions.
Files Help Menu

The Yahoo! Group Files Help Menu contains the answers to many FAQ's.

Each Yahoo! page has an extensive help page associated with it. If you are unable to find the answer to your question on these help pages, an email address if provided for you to use to ask additional questions.

Calendar Options

You may choose to sychronize your Yahoo! group calendar with your regular Yahoo! calendar. The options for customizing your Yahoo! calendar are listed at the left.

You can also overlap calendars from several groups to check for conflicting schedule items.

The calendar feature can also be used to automatically send reminders to group members about important meetings or deadlines.
